The Hidden Costs of Choosing the Wrong Contractor: A Cautionary Tale

Jun 11, 2024

Recently, we were called to inspect a deck that had been built just three months prior by a budget contractor. Unfortunately, what we found during our inspection highlighted several serious issues that could have easily been avoided with the proper knowledge and expertise. Here’s a detailed look at the problems we discovered and why choosing the right contractor is crucial for your home projects.

1. Improper Joist Spacing

The first issue we noticed was improper joist spacing. The manufacturer recommends a spacing of 16 inches between joists. However, we prefer to build all our composite decks with 12-inch on-center spacing. Our experience has shown that 16-inch spacing can lead to a slightly wavy appearance, compromising both the look and structural integrity of the deck.

2. Incorrect Use of Butt Joints

The contractor also used butt joints incorrectly. Butt joints are where the ends of boards meet in the middle of the deck. This method is fundamentally flawed. We always use full-length boards and incorporate an appearance board that runs perpendicular to the other boards. This approach not only improves the aesthetic appeal but also facilitates water shedding and ensures a robust connection to the substructure, significantly extending the deck's lifespan.

3. Incorrect Fastening Schedule

Using the proper screws in the correct way is critical. While the contractor used the right type of screws, they were not applied correctly, leading to further issues. Proper fastening is essential to ensure the deck’s durability and safety.

Building a Deck the Right Way

Constructing a deck involves more than just laying down boards and pouring concrete. There are various technical aspects to consider, such as dead loads, live loads, lateral loads, anchors, and the correct use of fasteners and materials. Since the onset of COVID-19, the market has seen an influx of inexperienced contractors. While some come close to getting it right, the lack of proper knowledge can result in costly mistakes. In this case, the homeowner is now faced with the unfortunate reality of having to pay for the deck to be redone. The original contractor is unresponsive, and the only solution is to start over with all new decking. This situation could have been avoided with the right expertise from the beginning.

The Importance of Due Diligence

I spent 20 years as a paramedic, where knowing my field was crucial. Now, as an outdoor living specialist, I apply the same level of dedication to my work. We learn from our mistakes and always strive to make things right.

Currently, we receive 4-5 calls a month to fix decks that were improperly built by other “cheaper” contractors. This isn’t about saving a few dollars on a tool; these projects involve significant investments. It’s vital to do your homework: check references, verify insurance status, read reviews, and scrutinize photos of previous work. Be wary of deceptive practices, such as using photos from other regions that don’t reflect local work.

Choosing the right contractor can save you from a lot of headaches and expenses down the line. As contractors, we hate seeing homeowners frustrated with poorly executed projects. It’s our job to step in and make things right, but prevention is always better than a cure. So, do your due diligence, and ensure your next project is handled by a professional who knows the ins and outs of the job. Your home deserves nothing less.

We are so happy with the service provided by Hometown Decking. They quoted us a reasonable price and when they completed the work we were so happy. Highly recommend.

This group was thoroughly professional from start to finish. Every question I had was answered. Thanks to them I am able to save an awesome shade tree as part of my deck
I only wish that I had another project for them to do. They created a perfect deck that will not require any maintenance. Other estimates would not even consider saving that tree.

I could not be happier with Hometown Decking, our new deck is fantastic! We ultimately went with Mike because gave us the best design advice and had the best price for a composite deck. We were on the calendar within a week of accepting the quote. Construction was finished within 2 days (the crew was like 10 guys!) After it was finished, they did a walkthrough with us and even sent out a guy to screw in the one screw that was sticking out near one of the posts. Great company, easy to work with, and they do an awesome job!
