You have decided to invest in your home and want to hire a contractor to build your dream backyard So how do you choose the right contractor for the job?
We have heard it so many times, someone hired a deck contractor to build a deck, pergola, or patio cover. The deck builder they hire is not knowledgeable in current building practices and codes and builds the customer a deck that is not structurally sound and quite frankly is dangerous. l have been out to people’s houses to check their work and been so scared to walk out on it that my engineers will refuse. I have seen work so bad that it would make a layman weekend warrior builder cringe.
As someone who builds with the highest standards and quality in mind, this makes me mad because so many times it is the simple stuff that could have just been done right with just a little bit of knowledge or desire. I often wonder if they just didn’t know or if they were just trying to cut corners. I am not one to talk bad about another contractor and most of the time will just tell them I am sorry and show them the mistakes.
How do you pick the right contractor?
- It is strongly advised to obtain references. I highly recommend obtaining a minimum of 3 references for each bid. This will enhance the quality and reliability of the information you receive.
- Do they possess verifiable evidence of insurance that would provide coverage for accidents, injuries, or losses?
- Call your local suppliers where materials are purchased and see if they know the builder and their reputation.
- Review their work – Take the opportunity to visit a project or two and assess their progress. We always try to accommodate our customers for something close to their scope of work.
I have seen anger, frustration, and downright depression from being taken advantage of or having shoddy work done. So many times the customer has spent many years of savings on this and now they are dealing with a whole other issue. Please take your time to research and do your best to find the right contractor.
So how do you avoid this problem?
The simple answer is to hire the right deck contractor. Ask for references, look at their portfolio, and ask lots of questions. Do they have a good reputation with past clients? Are their prices in line with what the others are charging? Can they provide detailed plans and drawings of your project? Who will be the one coming to your home for the job? You want to make sure that they are a reliable and experienced company with a good track record. Finally, read the contract so you can refer back to it later if needed. Make sure the contractor is clear about what materials will be used and how long the project will take before you sign any agreements or contracts.
Taking these steps will help ensure that you are working with a professional contractor who can deliver a job well done. Good luck, and happy deck building!
Once you’ve chosen the right deck builder, make sure to have some fun with your project. Your backyard is a great place to create an outdoor space for entertaining friends and family or just relaxing in the sun.
